Is Living in a Tiny House Worth It?

The minimalist lifestyle has become very popular in the last decade, so much so that homeowners are even making moves to downsize their living spaces. Giving up physical stuff is one thing, but limiting your space is a whole other idea. In this blog, we’ll touch base with the idea of living in a tiny house along with some considerations to think about.

Why Tiny House Living?

Tiny house living might seem like a recent trend, but people have been living in tiny houses ever since pioneering times! From grass huts to igloos, early settlers where the original tiny homesteaders. Tiny home communities are even being considered a solution for the homeless! One of the major themes that defines this idea is practicality. If you are paying for space, why pay for more than you need? There’s also a popular notion of lessening the indoor space so that it forces us to live more on the outside and get back in touch with nature.

Here are a few more reasons people are building tiny houses:

  • Can be mobile for easy travel excursions.
  • Easily built from recycled material and are usually more eco-friendly.
  • Can help save money.
  • Repairs are easier to pay for and manage.
  • Upgrades can be easily made.

Is a Tiny Home a Good Fit for You?

When considering a new home, there is already a lot to think about. Tiny house living is no exception and can be even more of a consideration depending on the person. There are tradeoffs you will have to weigh out.

  • How much is your space worth to you? How many live in your home? Are you okay with sharing space or do you need an area to call your own? Could you get used to it?
  • How important is stuff to you? Could you part with larger items? Could you do without stuff you don’t necessarily need? Are you minimalist or want to be?
  • Are you ready for the lifestyle? Ready to give up hosting dinner parties? Excited to give up being cooped up indoors all the time?

Tips on Moving Forward

So, you’ve seen all the shows and read a few books, but are you really ready to move into a tiny house? It’s an important question when moving forward on this adventure. Here are some tips to move you closer to an absolute answer.

  • Test Your Minimalistic Chops. Trimming down on your stuff is a big shift that takes time and practice. Try minimizing your wardrobe, décor, and necessities. You might find out that you are exceptional at living with less or that you are miserable. It’s a crucial step that you’ll need to make the move.
  • Research! Watching reality shows or reading a few articles is not enough. You must do some definitive digging and deciding. Talk to others that have lived the lifestyle. Find out the facts about the logistics. Knowledge is power and the more you know, the more you’ll be ready.
  • Try it out. A great way of knowing whether or not you can do this is to actually try it out! Take a little vacation and rent a tiny home or cabin for a weekend. See how you feel after the experiment. This probably will not give you full evidence is tiny house living is for you, but it will give you a taste.

Tiny Home Living in Cincinnati

Tiny home communities are a hard find, especially in the greater Cincinnati region. There are often minimum size requirements for permanent residences, and many are prohibited because they are not on a foundation. Even some recreational-vehicle parks aren’t always hospitable to tiny homes. There is a tiny village community just 1.5 hours from Cincinnati, Cedar Springs Tiny Village. It’s nestled along the shore of Silver Lake, just a few blocks from downtown New Paris.

Bottom Line for Living in a Tiny House

Home can be a lot of things for many people. Some say it is where the heart is or it is what you make of it. Whatever it is for you is what counts, whether it be a palace or a tiny house.
